⚡ Quick answer
How do you replace a gas lift on a gaming chair?
Tip the chair upside down, pull the seat away from the gas lift, remove the old cylinder, insert the new one, and reattach the seat. The whole process takes 20–30 minutes with no special tools. See the full step-by-step instructions below.

Why does a gas lift fail?

At ChairRepair.eu, we specialise in gaming chair and office chair spare parts across Europe — and gas lift replacement is one of the most common repairs we help customers with. Gas lifts are sealed cylinders that gradually lose pressure over time. Daily sitting and standing puts stress on the cylinder, and gaming chairs are exposed to more dynamic use than standard office chairs — fast movements and harder sitting can create short bursts of force significantly higher than body weight. In some cases loads exceed 120 kg, even if the user weighs less. This is why using a BIFMA-certified gas lift matters.

Step-by-step instructions

Step 01
Remove the seat from the base
Tip the chair on its side or upside down. Pull the seat mechanism away from the gas lift. If stuck, tap gently with a rubber mallet while twisting slightly.
Step 02
Remove the gas lift from the base
With the seat removed, pull the gas lift cylinder upward out of the chair base. It may need a firm tug or a few taps from below.

Step 03
Insert the new gas lift
Push the new gas lift cylinder down into the chair base until it sits securely. Make sure it is straight and fully seated before continuing.
Step 04
Reattach the seat mechanism
Lower the seat mechanism onto the top of the gas lift and press firmly until it locks into place.
Step 05
Test the height adjustment
Sit in the chair and test the lever. The chair should now hold its height without sinking. If it still sinks, check that the cylinder is fully seated in the base.

Tips & notes

💡 Class 3 vs Class 4

Class 3 suits lighter users or occasional use. Class 4 is standard for most gaming chairs. Heavy Duty Class 4 is ideal for daily use or users over 90 kg. If you are not sure which size fits your chair, read our gas lift measuring guide. If in doubt, go Class 4.

💡 BIFMA certification matters

Our gas lifts are BIFMA-certified and tested to 14,000 Newtons — essential for gaming chairs under heavy dynamic use. Many cheap replacements are not certified and fail within months.
